How to borrow airtime on MTN using USSD code

The USSD code and other methods which we are going to show you below will allow you borrow airtime on your MTN SIM card based on your request and eligibility.

Hence, anytime you run out of airtime on your MTN line, you can request MTN network for the amount you’re eligible for and payback later.

MTN airtime borrowing service, also known as XtraTime. It makes your life easier at a point when you need to make an urgent call while you’re lack of airtime and unable to buy a recharge card for some reasons.

How to borrow airtime on MTN network using USSD code

MTN airtime borrowing USSD code is a service which can enable you to borrow airtime on credit when you run out of airtime and payback on your next recharge. It is available to only prepaid customers.

To be eligible to borrow airtime on MTN network, you must:

  • Be a Prepaid customer of MTN network
  • Have a registered MTN SIM card
  • Have been using MTN SIM card for more than 3 months
  • Have spent at least N200 monthly for 3 months
  • Have between N0 and N75 in your main account
  • Paid up any outstanding loan

To transfer airtime on MTN using USSD code, *606#, simply follow the steps below:

  • Dial *606# and select XtraTime
  • You can then select your preferred amount from the list
  • After selecting your preferred amount, the system will then send you a message with the amount you are about to borrow and the applicable service fee for you to confirm the transaction.
  • Once you confirm your transaction, the system will deduct the service fee, credit your XtraTime account with the remaining airtime balance and send you a successful notification message.

How to borrow airtime on MTN via SMS or calling method

The step by step instructions of how to borrow airtime on MTN network via calling or Interactive Voice Response (IVR) are as follows:

  • Dial 606 and the system will play an announcement for you to select your preferred language, either English, Igbo Hausa or Yoruba but selecting English language is very recommended
  • Upon selecting your preferred language, you will be required to select either XtraTime or XtraByte for borrowing airtime or data respectively.
  • Once you select XtraTime, the system will then call out all the airtime amount that you can borrow.
  • Now, you can then select your preferred amount from the list
  • After selecting your preferred amount, the system will then play an announcement with the amount you are about to borrow and the applicable service fee attached for you to confirm the transaction continue.
  • Once you confirm your transaction, the system will deduct the service fee, credit your XtraTime account with the remaining airtime balance and send you a successful notification message.

Please note that you will be charged a service fee of 15.36% on all borrowing bands except the N25 lending band, which charges 20.48% service fee.

The service charge will be deducted before the airtime loan is credited into your airtime account balance.

For example, if you request for a loan of N25, a service fee of N5.12 (20.48% of N25) will be deducted and you will be credited with N19.88 in your XtraTime account while your main account will be debited with N25, i.e, you main account will be in –N25 in order to imply that you are to pay back N25 on your next recharge.

Another best example is when you request for a loan of N100 on your MTN SIM card, note that a service fee of N15.36 (15.36% of N100) will be deducted and you will be credited with N84.64 in your account balance but your main account will be debited with N100, i.e, your main account will be -N100 so as to imply that you are to pay back N100 on your next recharge.

How to check MTN borrowed airtime account balance?

After you have successfully borrowed airtime from MTN network to your SIM card, you can decide to check its remaining balance in order to know the amount that you have used.

Happily, you can check your MTN XtraTime account balance in the following ways;

  • Using the USSD code method, *606#, simply dial *606# and select ‘My Account’ then select ‘2’ to view your account balance
  • By using IVR menu, just simply dial 606, follow the voice prompt, press 5 and your account balance will be sent to you in an SMS
  • Or you simply send Balance in form of text message to 606.

The good news is that you can borrow another airtime even though you have an existing airtime loan to pay back as long as you are still within your credit limit.

How to pay back MTN borrowed airtime

Any borrowed airtime on your MTN line will be paid automatically immediately you have got an airtime in your SIM card.

You will be able to pay back any outstanding amount of airtime you borrowed on your line by loading recharge card, transferring airtime from your friends, etc.

Consequently, please note that you can’t refuse to pay back the debt you owe unless you stop using your MTN SIM card.

If you have a pending loan on your MTN line, even though you load a recharge card in the mid night or migrate to other package, your airtime must be deducted.

In the event where you recharge using a different recharge code, for example, MTN AWUF4U, your borrowed airtime will be deducted from the amount recharged then the balance or any associated bonus will be loaded into their respective dedicated accounts.
