How to write a practical/experiment report very fast

Experiment is the process of carrying out some scientific practices to find out the cause, solution or how a particular thing works. Sometimes, experiment is also known as practical. The venue for carrying out the experiment is called a laboratory (lab). After the practical has been carried out, students are then instructed to present a report. Here, we will discuss with you how to write practical/experiment report very fast like a professional.

A report is a presentation of an event witnessed or observed via written, recorded. In practical report, you are required to make a written a report about what you assumed during the practical, your conclusion, recommendation, final result, etc.

Practical is the fastest way for students to easily learn what they have been learned its theory parts in the classroom. In Nigeria, practical carries 20% of mark of the course the students are studying in school.

Although, you may be part of the students who participate practical and still get no mark if you don’t know how to write a good report writing. Sometimes, some students get 9/20, 15/20, 16/10, etc. which is depending on the format of their report writing and some other circumstances.

Please note that practical/experiment is meant for science student like engineering, SLT, microbiology, pharmacy, medicine and surgery, and among other experimental science courses, hence, to write a good report, you must be imaginative, and creative.

How to write practical report for lab

Now, let’s start to discuss how to write a good practical/experiment report step by step.

  1. Date.
  2. Title Page.
  3. Introduction.
  4. Equipment/Apparatus.
  5. Procedure.
  6. Final result.
  7. Observation.
  8. Conclusion.
  9. Recommendation.
  10. References.

1. Date

To start writing a practical report, keep in mind to write down the date which the practical/experiments was being carried out. Your date can be written in any style of your choice but make sure is true.

2. Title Page

For any practical/experiment report writing to be considered good, it must have tile page. The title of practical report should be descriptive of the experiment and reflect what the experiment is all about. 

For example, you can write your title as “Determining the Free Chlorine Content of Pool Water” or ”to Determine the Free Chorine Content of Pool Water”.

3. Introduction

Another step involved in writing a practical/experiment report very fast is writing your introduction in your own understanding. Please try not to copy from a lab manual or other guidelines. Instead, show comprehension of the experiment by briefly explaining the problem.

The introduction of any report discusses the problem being studied and other theory that is relevant to understanding the findings. 

The hypothesis of the experiment and the motivation for the research are stated in introduction section.

4. Equipment/Apparatus

In this section, you are to just simply list out the equipment, materials or apparatus used in carrying out the experiment/practical. For example, if the practical is all about finding the osmosis of an object, then, you must use; water, U-shaped tube, etc. Please clearly state them.

5. Procedure

Now, another step of how to write a practical/experiment report very fast is outlining the procedure.

The methods and materials section provides an overview of any equipment, apparatus, or other substances used in the experiment, as well as the steps taken during the experiment. If using any specific amounts of materials, make sure the amount is listed. 

Ex: pipette, graduated cylinder, 1.13mg of Na, 0.67mg Ag

List the steps taken as they actually happened during the experiment, not as they were supposed to happen. 

If written correctly, another researcher should be able to duplicate the experiment and get the same or very similar results. 

5. Final result

The final result section is one of the most important parts of the practical/experiment report. It analyzes the results of the experiment and is a discussion of the data. 

If any results are unexpected, explain why they are unexpected and how they did or did not effect the data obtained. 

Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the design of the experiment and compare your results to other similar experiments.

In this section, if there are any experimental errors, analyze them. Explain your results and discuss them using relevant terms and theories.

When writing a discussion try to answer these questions: What do the results indicate? What is the significance of the results Are there any gaps in knowledge? Are there any new questions that have been raised?

6. Observation

Observation section is just for you to briefly state a specific thing(s) you observed during the experiment. You can put it in this way ”it was observed that so so things have become this or that”.

7. Conclusion

To write a good report, you must have to write the conclusion of the experiment/practical. It is a summation of the experiment. It should clearly and concisely state what was learned during the practical and its importance.

If there is future work that needs to be done, it can be explained in the conclusion page as well.

8. Recommendation

In this section, clearly state your recommendation about the practical. For example, if there is poor supply of light or power, you may make your recommendation as ”it was recommended that there must be adequate supply of power and light for students to effectively carry the experiment henceforth.

9. References

In the event that you use any outside resources to carry out the experiment, those resources must be cited in the references section of the experiment/practical report.
