The following Nigerian Vice Chancellors lead/led the university’s academic and administrative departments. They were/are responsible to serve on several university councils, assist with policy development and academic planning, prepare budgets, and maintain the institution’s positive image.

Some important duties or roles of vice chancellors of Nigerian university are:

  • The Vice-Chancellor shall have the power to convene meetings of any of the authorities, bodies or committees, as and when he considers it necessary to do so.
  • The Vice-Chancellor shall ensure that directions issued by the Chancellor are strictly complied with or, as the case may be, implemented.

Who was the first vice chancellor in Nigeria

The first person who appointed to the position of vice chancellor in the history of Nigeria is Eni Njoku who was born on 6 November 1917 –and died on 22 December 1974. He was a Nigerian botanist and educator.

He was vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (1962–65) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1966-1970).

Late Njoku studied botany at the University of Manchester in England. He graduated with a first-class honors degree in 1947 and obtained his M.A. degree the following year. In 1954, he obtained his external doctorate degree from the University of London.

Who was the first female vice chancellor in Nigeria

Grace Alele-Williams is a professor of mathematics education, who made history as the first Nigerian female vice-chancellor at the University of Benin and first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate.

Grace attended Government School, Warri, and Queen’s College, Lagos, graduating in 1949. In that year she entered University College Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan, and graduated with an Honours Degree in Mathematics in 1954.

At this time University of Ibadan was not awarding its own degrees and so the Honours Degree that she received was an external University of London degree.

Every summer during her undergraduate studies, Alele returned to her home town of Warri and, starting in 1950, she taught mathematics during the summer vacation at Hussey College, Warri.
