UNILAG as a federal government owned university which located in a celebrity state, Lagos state, many musicians like to study in it.

In this today’s article, I am going to show you all notable alumni of UNILAG who are a musician or are currently studying music in the school.

List of notable Musicians that studied in UNILAG

1. Wande Coal

Wande Coal began his primary school education at Staff Nursery and Primary School Ijanikin Lagos State and later proceeded to Federal Government College, ijanikin Lagos in Lagos State for his secondary school education.

Then he offered attended University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State, where he studied Curriculum Studies.

Wande Coal was born on 18 October 1985 in Lagos Island, Lagos state, Nigeria to Chief Ibukun Olufunto and Omolara Oluwayemisi Ojosipe. He is the first son of two children.

2. Mayorkun

Mayorkun was born on 23 March 1994 in Osun State, Nigeria. He is the first child of three, born into a family of entertainers.

His mother is a Nollywood actress and his father, an artist and a movie producer.

Mayorkun was part of the choir at a very young age where he, according to him, “learnt the rudiments of music”.

He has a degree in accounting from the University of Lagos, and was in a banking job before he was discovered in 2016, hence, according to the list, he is one of the notable Musicians that studied in UNILAG.

Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel (born 23 March 1994), known professionally as Mayorkun, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and pianist.

He released a cover of Davido’s “The Money” single and was discovered by the singer on Twitter.

Mayorkun was signed to Davido’s record label DMW from 2016 to 2021; his debut single “Eleko” was released under the label.

Mayorkun released his debut studio album The Mayor of Lagos in November 2018. After his exit from DMW in 2021; he released “Let Me Know” under Sony Music West Africa.

He released his second debut studio album Back In Office in October 2021, under Sony Music West Africa division.

3. Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade was raised in a multi-ethnic home from Nigeria, Her father James Alade was a commissioner of police from Ondo State, Nigeria while her mother Helen Uzoma is a native of Abia State, Nigeria.

According to Yemi, She taps from the Igbo and Yoruba ethnicities of her parents.

Alade attended secondary School at Victory Grammar School, Ikeja and the University of Lagos.

During her university education, Alade took part in a TV talent show called Peak Talent Show where she emerged winner. That was Alade’s debut appearance on TV and where she gained popularity. She was then signed to Effyzzie Music Group.

4. Chidinma

Chidinma attended primary and secondary school in Ketu before relocating to Ikorodu with her family.

She worked as a business promoter in Lagos prior to auditioning for the third season of Project Fame West Africa.

Chidinma wanted to study mass communication but ended up attaining a sociology degree from the University of Lagos. She initially declined her admission to the University of Lagos due to some reasons.

According to her, she has transitioned into the Gospel Music Industry after she was signed by Eezee Conceptz, a top gospel producing agency.

5. Reekado Banks

Reekado Banks completed his secondary school at the age of 14 and started recording his first set of songs in 2008.

His elder brother produced all of his earlier songs and tutored him on the rudiments of singing, writing and producing.

He derived the stage name ”Reekado Banks” by combining the meanings of the two names; the former part of his stage name translates to “strong ruler”, while the latter part loosely translates to “wealth”.

In 2014, Reekado Banks graduated from the University of Lagos with a degree in history and strategic study. As a result of this, he is now in the list of top notable musicians that studied in UNILAG.

6. Nathaniel Bassey

Bassey was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1981. He studied international relations and politics at the University of Lagos before moving to London to study politics thereafter. Conversely, he studied music at Middlesex University Summer School.

Nathaniel Bassey is a Nigerian singer, pastor, trumpeter and gospel songwriter popularly known for his songs “Imela”, “Onise Iyanu” and “Olowogbogboro.” The church he attends is The Redeemed Christian Church Of God (RCCG).

7. Lil Kesh

Keshinro Ololade (born March 17, 1994), known professionally as Lil Kesh, is a Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter.

He is one of the biggest and most influential artists in Nigeria and Africa at large. He rose to limelight after releasing the hit single “Shoki”.

He attended, Stockbridge College for his primary and secondary education and then proceeded to the University of lagos (UNILAG) where, he studied Linguistics.

Later, he moved on to the National Open University, Nigeria and studied Mass Communication online.

He began his music career in 2012 when he started rapping among his colleagues in Bariga.

Shortly after, he released “Lyrically”, a debut single which the song went viral within Nigerian universities.

8. YCee

Ycee was born in Festac Town, a housing estate in Lagos State, Nigeria. He completed his basic education at Dr. Soyemi Memorial Nursery and Primary School.

YCee is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter. He was born January 29, 1993.

He attended the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Ojo for his secondary education, then studied marine biology at the University of Lagos.

9. Ada Ehi

Ada Ogochukwu Ehi was born on 18 September 1987. She is simply known by her stage name, Ada Ehi.

She is a Nigerian gospel singer, writer, recording and performing artist. She started her musical career at the age of 10 as a backup singer for child star Tosin Jegede.

Since she professionally started her music career under Loveworld Records in 2009, she has increasingly gained local and international popularity through her songs and music videos.

Ada Ehi was born in a native of Imo State in Nigeria. She graduated from UNILAG where she studied Chemical & Polymer Engineering.

10. Oby Ezekwesili

Obiageli Ezekwesili (born 28 April, 1963), also popularly known as Oby Ezekwesili, is an economic policy expert, an advocate for transparency, accountability, good governance and Human Capital Development, a humanitarian and an activist.

She is a former vice president of the World Bank (African Region), co-founder and founding director of Transparency International, co-founder of the BringBackOurGirls movement and has also served twice as Federal Minister in Nigeria.

She is also the founder of FixPolitics Initiative, a research-based citizens-led initiative, the School of Politics Policy and Governance (SPPG), and Human Capital Africa respectively.

Oby Ezekwesili has held a Bachelor degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Master degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, as well as a Master of Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

She trained with the firm of Deloitte and Touche and qualified as a chartered accountant.

11. Funke Akindele

Akindele was born on August 24, 1977, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the second of three children (two girls and one boy).

Her mother is a medical doctor while her father is a retired school principal. She attended Grace Children School Gbagada, Lagos State.

She obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication from the former Ogun State Polytechnic which is now known as Moshood Abiola Polytechnic.

She earned a Law degree from the University of Lagos. She is popularly known, as Funke Akindele or Jenifa. She is a Nigerian actress and producer.

12. Mercy Aigbe

Mercy Aigbe was born on 1 January 1978 in Edo State to Pa Aigbe and Mrs Abisola Grace Owodunni.

She was hailed in Benin city which is the capital city or headquarter of Edo State. She is the second child in a family of five.

She did her primary education at St. Francis primary school and attended Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School Ikeja, Lagos. She then went to The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, where she obtained her OND in Financial Studies.

In 2001, Mercy Aigbe graduated from University of Lagos with a B.A degree in Theater Arts.

13. Stella Damasus

Stella Damasus was born in Benin City, Edo State in Nigeria.  She is a Nigerian actress and singer.

She grew up in Benin City where she completed most of her primary education. Now, she is a Theatre arts graduate of the University of Lagos.

Hence, she is in the list of famous notable musicians that studied in UNILAG.

14. Richard Mofe-Damijo

Richard Mofe-Damijo was born in Aladja community of Udu Kingdom, Delta State. He is a Nigerian actor, writer, producer, and lawyer.

His real name is ”Richard Eyimofe Evans Mofe-Damijo” while people popularly known him as RMD.

He attended Midwest College, Warri and Anglican Grammar School and was a member of the Drama Club. He enrolled into the University of Benin to continue his education and studied Theatre Arts but he didn’t gain admission.

In 1997, Mofe-Damijo returned to the university to study law at the University of Lagos and graduated in 2004.

15. Ufoma McDermott

Ufoma McDermott attended Alama Private School Jos, Plateau state, Tunwase Nursery and primary school Ikeja, Lagos and finally Molly International Nursery and primary Ajao Estate for her nursery and primary education.

She then attended Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State for her secondary education.

Ufuoma McDermott later obtained a degree in French language from the University of Lagos where she partook in a Federal Government scholarship holiday programme.

She also has a certificate of diplomas from Alliance Française and NIIT. She has obtained a master’s degree in Public and International Affairs also from the University of Lagos.
