Presently in Nigeria, we have five different international Airports located across different states and locations. Today, we are going to discuss with you the list of all international airports in Nigeria and their location.

Apart from an international airport we have, we also also have domestic and local airports. The good news is that I will discuss them all to you one by one.

As a matter of fact, there are 11 different international airports in Nigeria for now but 5 of them are recommended for international flights and carefully constructed international standard.

List of all 5 international airports in Nigeria

The international airports in Nigeria are five in number and they are listed below:

  • Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport
  • Port Harcourt International Airport
  • Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja
  • Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

What are the major international airports in Nigeria

The top five fully accredited major international airports in Nigeria as of 2022 are listed and explained below:

Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport

Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is an oldest airport in Nigeria and one of the five accredited international airport located in Kano State. It has been for decades the main airport to the people of Kano State and neighbouring states.

Formerly, especially in the early year of its establishment, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport was known as the Royal Airforce station. But before Nigeria gained an independence, it was later renamed to the current name which we know it for now.

Mallam Aminu International Airport is the first airport in Nigeria, it was established before the first plane landed in Nigeria in the year 1922. Meanwhile, they fully started accepting passengers in 1936.

Port Harcourt International Airport

Port Harcourt International Airport (also known as PHC) is an international airport located in Omagwa, Port Harcourt, the capital of the southern state of Rivers state in Nigeria. It is the third busiest international airport in Nigeria by passengers’ traffic. 

This international airport plays a very important role in the economy of Nigeria because it is located in Port Harcourt, the centre of the country’s oil and gas industry.

Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja

Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja is the first busiest Airport in terms of passengers’ traffic in Nigeria. During its establishment, it was named as Lagos International Airport but was later renamed in the 1970s to Murtala Mohammed International Airport in order to honor the late former Nigerian Military leader, Murtala Mohammed.

Inside Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, there is very cleaned and many new restaurants and duty-free stores have opened. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police officers secure the inside of the airport’s terminal and the arrival areas outside.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was named after the Nigerian first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

According to the statistics, in 2018, almost about 7 million plus passengers were recorded to have patronized Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu

Akanu Ibiam International Airport is also known as Enugu Airport. It is an airport serving Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State of Nigeria, and its neighbouring cities, such as Abakaliki, Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Afikpo, Okigwe, Nsukka, Ugep, Orlu, Idah, Otukpo and Ogoja.

Enugu state has been remaining an important centre of political, cultural, commercial and administrative influence in the South Eastern part of the country. Therefore, the airport is strategically located in Enugu to serve this part of the country.

Please note that this is an international airport named after the First Governor General of the old Eastern Region, the Late RH Sir Akanu Ibiam.

Domestic airports in Nigeria

Presently, we have eleven different domestic airports in Nigeria spread across different states. Their name and address are listed and shown below:

#1 Benin Airport

This is one of the oldest domestic airports in Nigeria constructed in 1956 by the former Public Works Department (PWD) and upgraded in between 1975 and 1978 before it was finally handed over to the Nigerian Airports Authority (NAA).

#2 Ilorin Airport

This is also one of the eleven domestic Airports commissioned on February 16, 1978. It is located at Fili area of Ilorin, about 9km Southwest of Ilorin town.

#3 Sokoto Airport

Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto was commissioned on February 17, 1982. It is located at South-south West of Sokoto.

The Sokoto Airport is mostly utilized during Hajj and Umrah trip by passengers.

#4 Yola Airport

The Yola Airport is another domestic airports in the country located at Jimeta, about 8km Northwest of Yola commissioned on the 27th October, 1984. There was operation since 1978 until it was upgraded to an International Airport in 2002.

#5 Ibadan Airport

Ibadan Airport was commissioned in June, 1982 by the former Senate President, Joseph Wayas. It is located at Alakia, which is between Adegbaiji community and Iwo Road in Ibadan, Oyo state.

#6 Kaduna Airport

The Kaduna Airport is another one of the eleven domestic airports fully constructed and officially commissioned in 1982 under the management of the Nigerian Airports Authority (NAA).

This Airport is located about 12km from Kaduna Metropolis. The nearest community to the Airport is Isira Community.

#7 Kastina Airport

Another domestic airport in Nigeria we have in the list is Katsina Airport which was commenced operation on the 22nd December 1991 located southwest of Katsina at and about 4km from the metropolis.

The nearest towns and distances or sub burbs to the airport are Modoju 2KM, Makeva 3KM, and Kayanki 5KM.

#8 Maiduguri Airport

The Maiduguri Airport is one of the airports that acts as both domestic and international airport mostly engulfed by passengers’ traffic during Hajj operations.

The Airport is located in the headquarter of Borno state, Maiduguri and it is also sub burb by Bulunkutu, Shiwari, Shelmari and Muronti communities.

#9 Makurdi Airport

Makurdi Airport is known and acts a domestic airport in Nigeria commenced operation in 1983 presently located at Fili along Makurdi – Gboko road, Benue state.

#10 Minna Airport

Minna Airport was commissioned on 20th June, 1990 by the former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Now, the Minna Airport is located in Maikunkele Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State.

#11 Akure Airport

Akure Airport is also a domestic airport located in the city of Akure, Ondo state commissioned/established on 8th February 1986.
